3/31/12 Tampa Bay Lightning vs WPG Jets, 3-2 BOLTS

Another fun road trip, starting with getting us another cool Ford Edge, this one was Burgundy, which is the other color I’d wanted to drive…..black, white and burgundy, and, I’m a happy girl, except that now I really want one….or a Fusion, I’d love a Fusion!

So we took off Friday afternoon heading for just past 1/2 way, Lake City Florida. I soooo didn’t plan on this being Spring Break weekend, so, we left around 2p, and should have been there by 6:30, checking into our hotel, and all of a sudden, traffic just stopped, dead still, and we ran about 5 miles an hour for about an hour or so. So what should have taken about 4.5 hours took 6. We got checked into our hotel about 8p, munched, watched some TV to decompress, and crashed so we could head out early on down to Tampa.

Packed up and ready to go.

Saturday morning, we got up, had our coffee and boom, storm….thunder, lightning and really heavy rains. We got a break so we went ahead and checked out and hit the road about 8:30 for a 3 hour finish to Tampa, and what happened, boom, dead still traffic, just volume as far as the eye could see. Our first standstill, we sat for about 30 minutes, then the second time, we stopped completely and sat with the car in park for about 45 minutes. Finally it opened up, and we passed one 11 car accident, and two smaller residual ones, and we finally got to our hotel about 2:45p. So this leg of a 3 hour drive ended up being 6 hours and 45 minutes.

Saturday Morning, looking out our hotel window in Lake City before leaving for Tampa

Our Chariot Awaits!

We unpacked, got in our jerseys and headed for the arena as game time was 7p, doors open at 6p, and we wanted to talk to our dear friend Randy who was our Atlanta Thrashers rep for several years and when they left, he went to work for Tampa Bay and takes good care of us, so this would be our last time visiting with him since he lives in Tampa now and this was their last weekend home game. 😦

Once again, I didn’t bring my GAME lens!   I never know anymore where I’m going to get grief for one or not, so I brought a different one tonite, and was not used to it, so I wasn’t able to get my lighting settings quite right, but………..here goes……

My friend Libby Smith and her daughter Daisy were down for their first Tampa Bay game, so we wanted to spend a minute with them. Got over to the arena, and it was great, we each got a great big signed team photo and a huge Tampa Bay Lightning banner to wave!!!!! That was awesome. We talked to Randy awhile, pregame, then after warm ups Libby and Daisy met up with us and talked awhile and then it was game time.

Libby and Daisy loving their first Tampa Bay game!   Hey Girls!

Opening at Tampa Bay is always a lot of fun. They start with turning the lights down and lightening bolts all over the ice, and a baby goalie skating the ice to the tune of AC/DC Thunderstruck, then he goes to the center under the jumbotron and pumps his hockey stick to the words “Thunder”……”Thunder”…..! it’s really very cool.

My video of tonight’s “Thunderstruck”:

Warm Ups:

Chris Thorburn!   Thorburn really earned my respect in his last season as a Thrasher at one game where he lost his stick and he played on his knees and stomach and whatever it took to keep away a goal.  It was a fantastic thing to see.

Vinny had shaved his head for charity

Stapleton and Big Buff

Nik and his Greek God Hair

Bryan Little.   I do love Little!

Maybe they hang out together at the beach in WPG….no, probably not

Zach:   “Really”, “REALLY”?

The boys sharing a laugh.   Vinny telling them about shaving his head for charity?  While Antropov stands there with the Greek God hair

Ryan Malone, one of my new favorites!   Did really well for my fantasy hockey team this season, til he got injured.  Now he’s back and playing his @$$ off

A few Jets fans in the house

Nate Thompson

Zach with his usual, do de do, face

Bolts Zamboni

Then they start the Tesla coils going and the lightning comes from them which you can see, hear and feel. When the teams take the ice and the anthems are sung, the US Flag is unfurled and the crowd passes it over their heads while singing! Very moving. This game was Jets again, and we were really hoping Tampa Bay would win, and with two goals by Malone, Stamkos brought it home in OT at 3-2 Bolts, complete with a couple of brawls.

Tesla Coils / Lightning bolts:

During the Anthem, the US Flag always gets passed among the crowd

And the scratches for tonite

Game Time:

Add yet another NHL record to the books for Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steven Stamkos.   I know this is a warm up shot, but I just LOVE Stammertime’s smile!

The Bolts’ superstar center took all of 45 seconds to beat Ondrej Pavelec from the right circle to claim an NHL single-season record fifth overtime game-winning goal and propel the Lightning to a 3-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets at the Tampa Bay Times Forum on Saturday night.

Here it comes………..

He shoots………….

And Pavs has a souvenir

Next period, clogging up Pavs view

It’s a flying puck

Here it comes again

Fighting off lightning bolts is rough work!

“Jets” fans or woolly buggers!?

More mayhem around Pavs

Stamkos vs Slater face off

Hainsey takes out St. Louis, and there’s hell to pay for that

Marty is a package of dynamite!

To the sin bin with you Hainsey

My video of the Ron Hainsey / Ryan “Bugsy” Malone, or as we call him, “Home Malone”:

And some more action around the boards

Ryan Malone also had two goals, and Sebastien Caron stopped 26 shots for Tampa Bay, which snapped a two-game losing streak.

The goal also upped Stamkos’ league-best total to 56 on the season, as he pulled eight ahead of Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin in the Rocket Richard Trophy race. With four games remaining, the Lightning forward is seeking to become the NHL’s first 60-goal man since Alex Ovechkin in 2007-08.

Antti Miettinen and Kyle Wellwood had goals for Winnipeg, which has now lost six of the past eight. Pavelec made 36 saves.

Tampa Bay outshot Winnipeg 39-28 in the contest, including 21-7 in the third period.

The game featured 66 penalty minutes in total on the night, largely in part thanks to a scrum between Malone and Ron Hainsey, and an additional altercation in the final 20 minutes between Jets captain Andrew Ladd and Bolts defenseman Victor Hedman.

Wellwood’s 18th of the year snapped a 1-1 tie at 9:28 of the second period to pull Winnipeg ahead and give the Jets their first lead of the game. The goal came just 3:08 after Miettinen drew Winnipeg even by beating Caron off a centering pass from Evander Kane behind the net.

The Lightning opened the scoring late in the first when Tom Pyatt chipped the puck ahead into the offensive zone, where Malone gathered it, flipped a pass to himself, and out-muscled a defender before skating in against Pavelec and deking the Jets goaltender for a 1-0 lead.

His second of the night then tied it 2-2 after he swatted a rebound past Pavelec from the slot while on the power play. The goal was Malone’s fifth in his past two games following his fourth career hat trick two nights ago at New Jersey. He now has nine points in his past six games.

Caron, despite making just his first NHL start since Nov. 10, 2006, looked sharp throughout the night.

He made a strong glove save on an in-close shot by Hainsey during the first period and denied Bryan Little from point-blank range late in the game to keep Winnipeg at bay and force overtime.

Tampa Bay wraps up the home portion of the schedule Monday night against the division-rival Capitals before concluding the regular season with a three-game road trip through Canada.

NOTEWORTHY

Stamkos’ overtime goal is his 5th this season which sets a new NHL record for most overtime goals in a season. Tied with four OT goals in a single season each are: Patrik Elias (2003–04), Olli Jokinen (2005–06), Ilya Kovalchuk (2010–2011), Markus Naslund (2003–04), Scott Niedermayer (2001–02), Daniel Sedin (2006–07), and Mats Sundin (1999-00).

Ryan Malone’s goals were his fourth and fifth in the last two games, giving him 20 points (10G, 10A) in his last 22 games.

Of Tom Pyatt’s 19 points this season, 16 have come on home ice.

JT Brown made his NHL and professional debut tonight. The only other player to make his professional debut with the Lightning this season is Brett Connolly. Brown, Connolly, Pierre-Cedric Labrie, and Mike Angelidis are the only four players to make their NHL debuts with the Bolts this season.

Sebastien Caron made his first NHL start since 11/10/06 when he stopped 24 of 25 shots for the Chicago Blackhawks in a 3-1 win over the St. Louis Blues.

Nate Thompson made his return to the lineup tonight after missing the last seven games with an upper-body injury.

3/24/12 Preds v WPG Jets, 3-1 PREDS

I’m going to start this one a little bit differently.    It’s really pretty around Smashville, and here’s a few of the beautiful tulips right outside the arena, and……..

JB and the Preds girls.  Who is happier here  🙂

And, us, we are now PREDS converts, season ticket holders, and feel very much at home up there.   They treat us like family.

Yet another fun road trip.  We left Friday night, and on Saturday, we went to the matinee showing of “Hunger Games”.   AWESOME Movie, and highly recommended.

Before moving to Winnipeg and changing their nickname, the Jets were the Atlanta Thrashers, and were located just over 200 miles from Music City.  We were Full Season Ticket Holders for many years, and never missed a game, for any reason, and planned everything around hockey season, no matter what it was.

This weekend, about 100 former Thrashers fans came up for the game.  Some came up Friday night, some Saturday morning, but all were there in the arena for game time, and by game’s end, some would have tossed their jerseys on the ice in disgust, a form of closure, disappointment, a wide range of reasons.

There’s a WHOLE BUNCH of our Atlanta buddies in these 2 pictures:

There’s my sweet friend Nancy, her daughter Ashley, and Chikako.  These girls get to a lot of games too!  They are hockey lovers like we are.

Our dear friend Randy and Rene’.   Randy actually took our picture for us that’s shown above.  Thanks Randy!

Something has Nancy’s eye; Ashley and Chikako and Tracy T at the glass for warmups with Ashley’s great sign for Bryan Little

Sally C, Tim T (R) and Matthew Heitt (middle)

WARMUPS:   Sorry, there’s a lot of warm up shots this time, which I don’t usually do, but because if was the ThrashJets, and several without their helmets, so I wanted to get as many as I could stand before I timed out.

Tim Stapleton

Evander Kane (wore his jersey for a season)

Chris Mason warming up, for some reason

Ondrej The Giant (Pavelec), yep, that was originally my name for him  🙂

Kane’s new “do”

Big Buff, and yep, he is big now!

Jimmy Slater!   We used to say Slater for President, and he’s one of the good guys

Toby Enstrom

Alexander Burmistrov!   I LOVE Alex, still!

Stapleton and Burmi

Kane practicing his new dance moves

And, more Pavs

Hainsey and his hair

Bryan Little

And Ashley brought her Bryan Little sign (above).  I love how Bryan’s head is between the F**K on the poster behind him.   It blocked that ugly word, thanks Bryan

And, Hainsey getting refreshed.   Looking pretty is hard work!

And, a few Preds

Peks

Welcome back to the NHL Alexander Radulov!

Big Hal Gill

Warrior Pekka!!!

Time to get the game started:

Let me say this.   Pavelec kept Jets in this game for as long as they were in it!  He played his @$$ off, and there was a look on his face that we have seen before, very frustrated and his team let him down, again !      Pavelec will be one of the best in the NHL if he can get with a good team that is worthy of his development!    He’s come a LONG LONG way.

I think some of my shots got a little out of order, but blogger site can sometimes be frustrating in that you have a very small space to work in and you can’t expand that to move things around, etc., you have to delete and start over, so, I apologize.

Opening Song:   Leaving On A Jet Plane

Pekka Rinne made 24 saves to lead the Predators to a 3-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday night.

Matt Halischuk, Gabriel Bourque and Shea Weber scored for Nashville, which snapped a two-game losing streak by beating the Jets.

Tim Stapleton had the lone goal for the Jets, who have lost three of four. One night after rallying from a three goal-deficit and winning in overtime at Washington, the Jets lost their 21st road game of the season.

Halischuk scored the first goal at 2:56 of the second period. After a faceoff deep in the Nashville zone, Alexander Radulov carried the puck into the neutral zone. At the center-ice dot, he found Halischuk on his right. Without breaking stride, Halischuk entered Winnipeg’s zone and pulled up at the top of the right faceoff dot. From there, he fired a slap shot over the glove of Ondrej Pavelec for his 13th goal.

Somewhere during the game, they played this, it was priceless!!! Thanks GNASH and Preds, for taking good care of us homeless Thashers fans!

Radulov has a goal and an assist in two games since returning to the NHL after spending the last four seasons in Russia’s KHL.

“Clod” Noel, as the Jets fans are calling him lately!

Toby a little frustrated

Burmi fending off the big ole predator

My Favorite Sound in Nashville?   The PREDS Goal Horn:

Kane had complained to the refs that his hand was hurt.   It appeared they told him to quit crying and go play hockey

The first period remained scoreless in large part because of a blocked shot by Nashville defenseman Kevin Klein. Rinne was out of his crease after making a stop on Andrew Ladd, but the puck came right back to the Jets captain in the slot. Klein filled the vacated crease well and deflected Ladd’s wrist shot to the right corner.

Midway through the second, Bourque doubled Nashville’s lead. Nick Spaling‘s shot from the high slot hit the stick of Winnipeg defenseman Randy Jones in front, and Bourque quickly tapped it past Pavelec low to the glove side.

Spaling’s assist ended a 12-game drought without a point.

Next Period, Burmi getting his skate worked on

Oops, a little run in here

not a pretty recovery.  Check the little girl behind the glass sliding out of her chair, lol

Pekka said no, Ladd was not thrilled!

Pekka still keeping the door closed.  Wheeler kicking up some snow!

Pavs snatched this one right out of the air!

You have to wonder what these two are thinking.   Rad’s first home game back in the NHL.  Hainsey and his hair, looking like he’s whistling, pushing the puck along

Stapleton drew the Jets to within one at 12:53 of the third. From behind the Nashville net.
Spencer Machacek spotted Stapleton skating through the low slot. Stapleton split two Nashville players and had an easy tap-in for his 11th goal.

Here we go again.   It’s not over yet, guys

Check the little boy behind the glass, lol

Kane.  He has started to get a deranged look about him.  I can’t make my mind up what’s going on in his mind, but he did recently score his 30th goal of the season, tho it was after this game and after they were already eliminated from playoffs

Another Preds Goal and another souvenir for Pavelec

One of my favorite shots of all time!

Pavs facing Captain Weber, alone

We have seen that face so many times on Pavs.  He is over it!

Burmistrov and Kostitsyn

And, another Preds Goal

Aftermath of that goal  ~ Pavs not thrilled

One of two visits to the sin bin for Big Buff

Another pretty amazing Pavs move

Wonder that they’re saying to each other

Is it Pavsey or is it Hainelec

Again with the familiar face

Pavs:   “Really”…….”REALLY?”!!!!!!

Oh Lord, Did Pavs pass out again?

Nope, there he is

The eyes!  We know those eyes.

Weber finished the scoring with an empty-net, power-play goal from near center ice with 10.1 seconds remaining in the third.

4 gets a Frosty.  No frosty tonite, but we got one anyway to celebrate

Time to celebrate

Thrashers Jerseys thrown on the ice, on two separate intances; once during third period, and once at game end when Preds won.

Video of same:

NOTES: Nashville killed Winnipeg’s only power play of the game. The Predators have been short-handed just once in each of their last four games. . Nashville RW Jordin Tootoo was a healthy scratch. Before Saturday, his only two missed games this season were because of an NHL suspension resulting from his hit on Buffalo G Ryan Miller on Dec. 3. . The Jets are 1-23-3 when trailing after two periods. . Winnipeg RW Chris Thorburn missed his sixth consecutive game because of an undisclosed lower body injury.

Three star selections
1st: PEKKA RINNE
2nd: ALEXANDER RADULOV
3rd: GABRIEL BOURQUE

Winning Goaltender

Interesting “leftovers” from Saturday Nights game:
Nashville Predators 3, Winnipeg Jets 1
Bridgestone Arena; Nashville, Tennessee
March 24, 2012

LEFTOVER THOUGHTS:
* Pekka Rinne is now 4-0-0 all-time against the Winnipeg/Atlanta Thrashers franchise.
* Predators captain Shea Weber led all skaters with eight shots on goal.
* Weber’s eight shots are his most in any one game since March 17, 2011 against Boston. He had eight in that contest as well.
* Alexander Radulov has a point in each of his two games since returning to the NHL.
* Center Paul Gaustad made his first appearance in the Predator lineup since March 15 in San Jose.
* Nashville defenseman Kevin Klein had two saves on Saturday. Obviously he was not given credit as such but he might as well of been.
* With his helper on Matt Halischuk‘s goal, Klein tied his career high in scoring (18 points).
* Predators rookie Gabriel Bourque has four points in his last five games (one goal, three assists).
* Martin Erat, a winger, won all five faceoffs he took part in.
* Nashville only took one penalty.
* Winnipeg took four.
* Several Thrashers jerseys were thrown on the ice during a stoppage with 5:00 remaining.
* Even more Thrashers jerseys and hats were tossed onto the ice after the final horn.
* Nashville sold out their 22nd game of the season, a new franchise record.
* Saturday’s victory was the 498th of Barry Trotz’s NHL career.
* All 498 wins have come behind the same bench, a feat nobody else can claim.

3/12/11 Thrashers v Flyers, 5-4 Thrashers in OT!!!! Away Game

Best away game ever, even if we did have to watch it on TV!

Fun to listen to Kamal call the game too!  You can hear his calls here, ending with “I’m gonna need a chorus of What-What”:   He’s great!!!
Kamal Calls Thrashers v Flyers

Leino nets a hat trick  against Thrashers, Thrashers were down 3-0 for the majority of the game!!!  3rd period, they battle back to tie it up, score another goal each, go into OT and Hainsey, assisted by Kane, wins the game!

It was beautiful!  Here are some highlights!

Hainsey had a fantastic interview post game, haven’t found it yet, but will add it here if I do.

What a nite for Sons of Blueland!

2/27/11 v Totonto Waffles ~ 3-2 Thrashers in OT

What  great nite this turned out to be!   Toronto Maple Leafs were back in town and they have been nipping at our heels lately since the games have not been going our way since December!   You just have to hate the Leafs fans, they think that they are Stanley Cup Champions no matter how they play or who IS cup contenders.   (Video below of how they get!)

Goalies:  Chris Mason v James Reimer (to our surprise, Jean-Sebastien Giguere took over in goal in 2nd period for Leafs)

Thrashers were down 2-0 until the 3rd period, when Ladd and Stapleton tied it up, taking us to OT and Ron Hainsey brought it home for us!

I didn’t feel good today and my shoulder was hurting, so I didn’t bring my heavier lens tonite, and I knew I would miss it, and I did, but, I made do with the 400mm.   Be sure to stick with it all the way to the bottom.

A few shots.

This is the crew and all their great signs, the ritual at warm ups for many seasons  (Rose, Donna, Chris, Erin, Kevin, John, Randy, Rene, Mike, Beth, Virginia, Sandy, and I’m sure I’m missing somebody)

Cool lid, not fond of the guy tho.

I love the little guys coming out to hang with the Big Blue!

Watching that goal we just got on him, on the jumbo

Every time things aren’t going their way, Leafs start crap or feign injury, anything to stop play.

Buff is always on your backside somewhere!

Mason made the save.  He was really solid tonite.

Not where we want to see Pavelec 😦

Thrash helping the mini’s

Colby Armstrong back in Atlanta.   He deserved an Oscar tonite (Oscar night, by the way) for his performance of ‘pretense of getting hurt during a perfectly light check’

He thought he had it, but he didn’t

And, Stapleton’s first goal this season, and with NHL and Thrashers 🙂  Timmay!

And, more discussion

I Love the stare down by Ladd on Phaneuf, Captain to Captain!

And, we go to OT, tied at 2 .   And, Hainsey Scores the game winning goal!

Hainsey is buried in there somewhere!    What a great nite.

Kincade talking to Hainsey, 1st star!

This is Sandy and one of her many awesome signs!

Sandy’s daughter “Sara Beth” at post game with Hainsey!

I always love this when they play it.  I missed the first couple of seconds, but at the end, Beth and some other buddies are shown holding up their various signs.   This is from my youtube channel:
